Every board I've owned since 2009 has had the same two pedals on it.

A Morning Glory and something Klon-esque have been on my pedalboards for as long as i can remember. The Morning Glory because I designed it as my take on the Marshall Bluesbreaker, and it's the best-selling pedal we’ve ever made. The Klon circuit because in 1995 Bill Finnegan built an overdrive that did the version of high gain overdrive I had always wanted, and I've been collecting and modifying them ever since. My JHS modification of his KTR was called the Shamrock mod, a nod to the Boston Celtics logo, because Bill and the Klon are from Boston and Larry Bird is my hero. In 2023 that mod became featured in the JHS Pedals NOTAKLÖN, a solderless DIY kit you build yourself.

Those two pedals are all the dirt I need and they do everything I want. I could do a gig with this pair of drives and a delay pedal and be perfectly happy.

The problem with every two-in-one we've ever made — and almost everyone else’s — is that the two circuits are connected. You can flip which one comes first, but you can't put anything between them, and you can't give each side its own loop on a switcher. People asked us for independent jacks about a thousand times and we did it.

The Wanderer has four jacks. Use the main input on the far right and the main output on the far left and it behaves just like every two-in-one we've ever built, with a center toggle that points at whichever circuit is first in the series.

Use all four individual I/O jacks instead and the two circuits become completely independent. Put a compressor between them. Put a fuzz between them. Put your whole pedalboard between them — we don't know why you would, but you can. Or run each side into its own loop on a switcher and save them in presets like two separate pedals. That's what they are. They just share a case and a power supply.

Four gain stages from two footswitches.

Each side has a toggle, and each toggle has a Red Remote jack that lets you use our Red Remote switch to activate the onboard toggle. Most gain toggles on overdrive pedals just swap out the clipping diodes. Not here. Flip the Morning Glory Gain toggle and an entire additional gain stage comes into the circuit — the LED turns red, and the pedal comes alive with more gain, a slight volume boost and a fuller sound. Flip the NOTAKLÖN +/- toggle and you get the Shamrock mod: +4 dB of gain, more midrange, and an additional stage of hard clipping. Down is the original Klon voicing, exactly replicated. Up is the mod.

Plug a Red Remote into either jack and you flip that toggle with your foot. Any latching amp-style footswitch works, and if you run a switcher with amp-control outputs, it can flip both from a preset — no Red Remote needed. Morning Glory stock, Morning Glory high gain, NOTAKLÖN stock, NOTAKLÖN with the mod. Two rhythm sounds and two lead sounds without touching a knob. With these four tones and the ability to stack them, reorder them and add other pedals in-between — the options are staggering. This is the best two-in-one format on the market.

HOW TO USE IT

Morning Glory first, on all the time, at the edge of breakup with the tone controls flat. Stack the NOTAKLÖN on top for the rhythm sound. Red Remote on the Morning Glory for the bigger rhythm, Red Remote on the NOTAKLÖN for the lead boost. That's how Josh runs it.

If you like your heavier drive first, flip the order toggle. If you run a switcher, use the individual jacks and forget the order toggle exists — it's out of the circuit in that configuration.

The NOTAKLÖN side with Gain fully counterclockwise is a clean boost, up to +16dB with the Volume. Push an amp that's already breaking up.

Single coils and humbuckers both work. If your rig is already bright, the Bright Cut switch on the Morning Glory side pulls the top end down.

WHO THIS IS FOR

If you already run a Morning Glory and a Klon-style pedal as a pair, this is your drive section in one pedal in a space-saving format with both circuits benefitting from Red Remote functionality.

If you run a switcher and avoided the inseparability of two-in-one pedals, the individually isolated I/O jacks solves this for you.

CONTROLS

LEFT SIDE — NOTAKLÖN

Volume — Controls the output volume. Counterclockwise is less, clockwise is more.

Gain — Controls the amount of overdrive. Fully counterclockwise is clean, allowing up to +16dB of clean boost in conjunction with the Volume control. Fully clockwise is maximum overdrive. As the control is turned clockwise, the mid frequencies also increase.

Treble — Controls the amount of treble boost or cut. Noon is neutral.

+/- Toggle — "Shamrock Mod." Increases the overall gain by +4 dB, increases midrange, and engages an additional stage of hard clipping.

RIGHT SIDE — MORNING GLORY V4

Volume — Controls the output volume. Counterclockwise is less, clockwise is more.

Drive — Controls the amount of drive or gain. As the Drive is increased, it also adds brightness. Counterclockwise is less, clockwise is more.

Tone — Controls the amount of brightness. Clockwise is brighter, counterclockwise is darker.

Gain Toggle — Engages high gain mode when flipped up. The LED will turn red to indicate high gain mode is active.

Bright Cut Switch — Inset switch on the right side of the pedal that cuts the highest frequencies if the overall tone is too bright.

Order Toggle — The center toggle allows you to select which effect comes first in the signal chain for different tones when stacking both sides. The toggle points toward whichever effect is first in the chain. The Order toggle has no effect when using the individual FX jacks.

JACKS

Main Input / Output — Use the far right input and far left output when using the Wanderer as a standard two-in-one pedal.

Individual FX Jacks — The individual input and output jacks allow you to separate the two effects for use with an effects loop switcher or other external routing.

Red Remote Gain (Morning Glory) — 1/4" jack on the upper left side of the pedal. Connect a Red Remote to remotely switch the Morning Glory Gain toggle.

Red Remote +/- (NOTAKLÖN) — 1/4" jack on the lower left side of the pedal. Connect a Red Remote to remotely switch the +/- toggle.
